The Devil's Arithmetic 4-6

Today in class we started off by talking about The Devil’s Arithmetic, we talked about the genre of the story which was fiction. Then, we moved on to the author’s purpose in the story. We came up with the answer that was, “the author was trying to show the reader about the Jewish culture and their holidays, and the life of a young Jewish girl”. So far we also said that Hannah has not changed and that she is complaining more. We then shared our journal responses and jobs to the class. We shared illustrators, and we did summarizers and discussion directors. After that we had to take a quiz on the chapters. Tomorrow we going to have time in class to read your book and study for the vocab quiz on Friday or begin on the TDA 7-10 due Tuesday.

Important: Mr. Watson will be meeting with 6H-2 during lunch to discuss the Classical Roots vocabulary. Please join him if you would like a review before the test on Friday.

Today mr.watson told us that we were going to receive our first e-mail from our friends in ITALY. He told us not to use our steds e-mail for another purposes besides school. The e-mail from out friends will be about a law that is being contemplated, the law is that parents of kids that smoke can not smoke in the car, while their children are in the car. Then we discussed our families experiences with the Nazis and the Germans and Jewish beliefs.

The law is that if a parent smokes, then they aren’t aloud to smoke in their cars with children. Mr. Watson would also like us to copy the email to his address when you email the other kids in Italy. After we discussed our email obligations, we went over our Job and Journal Responses for the Devil’s Arithmetic. During this discussion, Sam was talking about how that his last Sunday school, was about the holocaust and how nobody had food and when they tried to get food they would get shot or killed someway. We ended our conversation by saying that homework will be chapters 4 THROUGH 6. This is due on Wednesday because we will be on a field trip Tuesday.

ERB Day 1

Mr. Watson said that we didn’t do as well as he had hoped on the vocab test, with a few exceptions. The rest of the class thought it was because we didn’t review enough. He passed back the quizzes, and then we went over them. After that, we corrected our homework, which were pages 94 and 95 in our vocab books. When we were doing that, Sam was rolling a water bottle up and down his desk. We also discussed the anatomy of his new shoes that he has had for one week now. That is all. :)

Research Day 2

Mr. Watson went over why a lady has come here to our school. He said that if you have read two books, then you can vote on your favorite one. If you have read three, then you can get something free from the bookstore. He also said that we are taking the ERB’s over the next two weeks. We will be going over something at the beginning of every class to get us ready for the ERB’s.

In the beginning of the class today, we went over what analogies are.

Example: EXTINCT: DODO :: ___________ : PALACE

Answer: SPLENDID

The relationship between the first pair of words is descriptive; extinct is describing dodo. Therefore, splendid is describing the palace.

Also, the groups worked on their projects. They worked on researching and maybe started their presentation.

Your lists of resources are due today by 3:30.

Day 1 Research

Mr. Watson talked about Criterion and his grading difficulties. Sarah presented her essay and Mr. Watson posted comments on our essays. He put in the introduction paragraph that we needed to include the author’s name and also the lessons that he learned. Mr. Watson changed the due date of our final draft by 3:30 on Thursday. Some of the spelling errors on Criterion are actually right such as names and quotes. Be sure that your entire essay is in present tense. Criterion doesn’t catch all the errors but at the same time, some of the errors are not really errors. For our preposition projects, you must have your plan by Tuesday 3:30 if you want 9/10. Tomorrow you must have a list of all of your research sourced turned in by 3:30. Interview, web, and books, are all the resources you need of you want full credit.

Plan Due

Mr. Watson was telling us about the Preposition Project…and how you can use the resources, the emails and the blog, to see that your first draft for your essay is due today by 3:30. Also we learned that the Essay will be due this Wednesday. He showed us an example of a plan for our project and Mr. Watson told us it would be an 8 out of 10. He explained it has to have correct grammar and spelling, that we can use our resources. He also talked about how it doesn’t matter if you don’t look at the blog every night because he emails it to us every homeroom study. Also you can write an article for the Press Journal on blogging and blogs and also how it helps us…if you want to do this please talk Mr. Watson. Then, after this we worked on our project.
