At the beginning of class everyone screamed at me for sitting in front of the fan. Then Mr. Watson told us to get out our homework and tablets. We did and then we started checking our homework. Most of us got a 100 on it because it was so easy. After that Mr. Watson told us to listen carefully because he was going to tell us how to get a 100 on our essay. He will give us a hard copy of the style guide. He told us how to get it. First, go to the button on the internet that says on deck. Enter our username and password. Then go to the button that says style guide. Ta da now you have it. Please save it because you may need it for the rest of the year. Then Sophia asked a question about backing up your files. Remember to always save your documents in my work. This is how you would head your paper.

Read the paper an you should get an A+. Mr. Watson emailed us a grading rubric this morning. Be smart and use it as a helper while you write your essay. After he finished his long speech we had seventeen minutes to work on our essays. We are all hoping the air conditioning is fixed tomorrow, so we won't be sweating through our quiz on verb phrases and participles.

UTBRS writing week

Mr. Watson explained to us why there was a fan in our room. He says that the power to the air conditioning has been cut, so the AC is off. Mr. Watson also says that all you need to know for the quiz tomorrow is the past participle verbs will end in –ed and the present participle verbs will end in –ing. Mr. Watson told us to bring our red grammar books to class today. When we got to class, he asked us to close our tablets and open our grammar books to page 103. We are learning about the tenses and participles. Mr. Watson assured us that the quiz this week will be easier than the last one, but you should probably still study. We also learned about present tense forms. A plural form of I walk, for example is we walk. Then we went through some practice exercises on pg. 104 very quickly. On our grammar quiz on Wednesday, there will be five sentences underlining the verb and identifying the past and present tense. And the second will be on helping verbs and main verbs.

We then added English to criterion. We worked on our essay and Mr. Watson explained the format of it. Make sure you put a thesis sentence in your introduction! You need at least three body paragraphs and a conclusion. You need to write the essay in present tense. Happy Halloween, hopefully none of the teachers assign us homework on Wednesday!

Today we turned in our Japanese American Job and Journal Response. Lindy shared her summary of the couple pages we read last night. Alex connected to the story saying that he’s not able to control his life, and that he can’t make his own choices yet. Mitch shared two skinny and fat questions, such as, “Was Norman born in America?”. Christy shared her journal response about her thoughts and opinions on the reading. She was very surprised that the boys name is “Norman”, and every time she said his name, she paused dramatically. She also thought that the Americans did the right thing putting all of the Japanese Americans in camps, but Max on the other hand thought the total opposite. Mr. Watson gave complements and opinions on both of theirs. The class had a very lengthy discussion on the subject. Chiara shared her wonderful picture she drew about Norman and his family moving and he for sale sign in their house. Mr. Watson is discussing our new writing project next week. There are three different options. We don’t have any homework over the weekend, or Tuesday. We don’t have to do the writing over the weekend, we don’t really know enough info, and Mr. Watson wants us to relax.

First Mr. Watson passed back our vocabulary tests and the grammar quizzes. Then we went over the answers of the vocabulary test. He told us that if we think our grade is unfair we should come and see Mr. Watson during homeroom study. Then we reviewed the answers for the grammar quiz that we could retake. Then we had to get out our red grammar books. We learned about main and helping verbs on pages 104- 106. Keshawna had many questions, but Mr. Watson had lots of answers. Keshawna finally got it! Mr. Watson received a call from Madison’s mom and she said that the Lower School book fair has the Sunshine State books. They'll be open from 6-8 tonight. Then we slammed our books together to make a lot of noise. Don’t forget to come to the Haunted House at Riverside Theatre this weekend. It’s on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday! I am a murdered girl in it!

Mr. Watson forgot his coffee this morning and was really tired. We all sat on our desks and lived happily ever after. Once everyone quieted down we pulled up our UTBRS Journal Response+ Job. Mr. Watson asked Emily to read her summary then asked her to share her Journal Response. Mr. Watson loved how she wrote her Journal Response. Brandon was anxiously waiting for his turn to share his Journal Response. Vinutha acted like and Angel when she raised her hand and Mr. Watson couldn’t resist it so he had to pick, on her and I have to say her Journal Response was pretty good! Karly shared her beautiful picture of Tomi’s dream. We also talked about the kantana and how Tomi felt about that. Some people didn’t understand about power so we also had a big conversation about that. Power is like Hitler, how he controlled the land. We also read some lines from the chapters and then talked about it. We also have an assignment next week when we do some “papers” on UTBRS, so START UNDERLINDING IMPORTANT STUFF LIKE THINGS ABOUT DIAMOND GRASS AND LIEING AND THE BANYAN TREE.


Friday: Mr. Watson’s going to email you the site and it is Called Japanese Americans WAR AT HOME and we have to read around 15 pages to read and do the Job+ Journal Response on it.

Today started off pretty good since nobody was tardy so we got right to work. First Mr. Watson gave us a talk about our conferences and how many great things he said about us. So then we went over our unit three vocabulary words. Rish, Zack Kraft, Sophia and many other people gave us their answers to our vocabulary homework. Then Mr. Watson told us that our last Quiz is Friday and we can take our other quiz again if you want. Then we have to read another reading outside of class. You must choose a book off the list Mr. Watson is going to give us. They are due one week before our next marking period ends.

Today in class we went over are grammar quiz. If you did bad on your quiz don’t worry I did really badly to. Mr. Watson is going to let us take a retest on Wednesday. We checked our vocabulary homework. Our homework is pg. 40-41 in our vocabulary books and our review template is do tomorrow. Class was only thirty-five minutes so we didn’t have much time to do a lot of work.

UTBRS 18-19

We came into class and then a lot of people had to leave to get their grammar books. Then we had to open to page 102 in the red grammar books. Mr. Watson told everyone to close their tablets unless they had the work we did on them. Mr. Watson asked Ganga about a sentence he said about chocolate.

Mr. Watson said since we only had 15 minutes left, to not take out our tablets at all. Olivia told us a summary from just what she remembered from reading. It was a really good summary from her memory. Mr. Watson read us a part about Tomi showing Billy his room. Cullen raised his hand just to tell us that The Butcher's name is Gayle. Mr. Watson said that Gayle is one of the only example of irony in the book because he's so tough and throwing wild pitches, but is voice is high and his name is Gayle. On Thursday it's going to be totally quiet because we're going to come in and finish our Book Review Templates or start reading our books for next quarter. We also have to email Mr. Watson our Jobs and Journal Responses. When we next meet about the book we'll have our last meeting about Under the Blood red Sun because we have to read the WHOLE book, including the epilogue. Tomorrow we have a grammar assessment so STUDY!!! Oh yah, today's my birthday, YAH!!!

Today in class we started our closing our tablet, and Mr. Watson was giving us a speech about our test which is going to be about 3.3 indirect object and 3.4 linking and predicate words. Then we opened up grammar and composition handbook to page 101. We started looking at questions about linking sentences, then predicate sentences. After we did questions 1 –10 on page 102. Number one the linking verb is looks, the predicate adjective is handsome. Number two, the linking verb is, is, the predicate noun is singer/dancer. Number three the action verb is appeared and there are no nouns. Then we did the rest by ourselves and it got really no were because we were talking. We went over them and most of us thought they were easy. For homework we have chapters 18 and 19 job and journal response to do. Make sure your review template is sent to mr. Watson by 11:59 p.m. Friday night

UTBRS 16-17

Today in class we talked about chapters 16 and 17 and our jobs and journal responses. Jacqs was the first called on because she was a summarizer, her summary was very good. Next called on was Jad ,he was a connector, he shared his job and journal response. Next was Olivia and she was word wizard, her three words were Bayonet: it is like a long knife put at the end of a rifle, Dutiful: Someone who does all their duties, and Thicket: I bunch of bushes and trees in an area Then she shares her journal response which is very good. Next was Meredith and her three words were Desolate: Sad, barren, lonely, nothing on it, deserted, and Isolated, Indebted: felt guilt, in debt, in a position that you owe someone else, and Colman Lantern: A brand of lanterns, they were oil lanterns. Ella went next and she shared her journal response, she is a very good writer. Mr. Watson asked "what is tact?", tact is manners, being more suddle. Mr. Watson is the BEST English teacher ever, he rocks. No work due Monday, which is a late start, but Chapters 18 and 19 are due on Tuesday. Have a good weekend!

Well the bell rang and I asked Mr. Watson what the word of the day was. So the word of the day is……. Bentley!!!!!. Then Sebastian came in the classroom singing Don’t Matter by Akon. You needed your red grammar book. When class actually started we went over are vocabulary test that we did Wednesday. Ben, Nicki, and Gabby all read their paragraphs on the back of their tests. Next we did some stuff in are red grammar book. We discussed indirect objects. *An indirect object always comes between the verb and the direct object* Then we did 3-10 the sentences in are red grammar book. And then Sebastian read my scribe while we were doing it. Next we went over are answers. Chapter 16 and 17 in UTBRS is due tommorow with your job and journal response.

Thanks for sharing your email address with me. I teach Japanese language and culture to 6th graders at an independent K-12 school in Honolulu, Hawaii.
I stumbled on to your English class blog and thought it might be interesting to collaborate on a project with you and your students. As I mentioned in your class message blog, my sixth graders have finished reading "Under the Blood Red Sun" and will soon be reading the companion novel "The House of the Red Fish" in their Language Arts class. Are your students planning to read The House of the Red fish novel too?

I don't have a specific project in mind, but I thought it might involve book discussions and possibly a joint technology project together. I'm also hoping for my students to share a little bit about Hawaii, Japanese language and culture and also we would love to share information about Pearl Harbor, etc.

We will also work on a Japanese language imovie project during second semester and could send you our Japanese videos if you are interested in learning some Japanese.

UTBRS 14 and 15

Today, everyone was late so we started late. Your homework over the weekend was to do vocabulary pages 33 and 34 and read Under the Blood Red Sun chapters 14 and 15 Job and journal. Finally, everyone piled in.
While we were waiting, Mr. Watson told us that the word of the day is Madison today. We took attendance, and everyone was here. Finally Mr. Watson told us to open our vocabulary books and he went around and checked if everyone did it. Then he sat down and told us to make sure we do our homework, and if we don’t, we will come see him at lunch and do it then because his homework helps you prepare for the tests and quizzes. He recommends that you do it.
Once we finished Vocabulary (which by the way we have a test on tomorrow) we went over the Under the Blood Red sun. We waited for everyone to get their work up, and their computers. It took a while to do such short tasks. But we finally did it. Summarizers went first. Amber shared her well written summary and everybody else shared their ideas, opinions, and our jobs too. We also thought if Kimi in the book should know about what is going on with the family and the war. Then some people showed their pretty illustrations. Jenny made a beautiful picture of the pigeons in the loft. Mr. Watson thought it was funny because someone in his first period class did the same thing. But in the book it said only two came back out of the three, and people drew 3. We also tried to find out a word. Mr. Watson asked a lot of people, but none knew. We actually went over a lot of words. The homework tonight is unit 2 vocabulary assessment due Wednesday, and Under the Blood Red sun chapters 16 and 17 job and journal due Friday. UTBRS

At the beginning of class Mr. Watson explained why he had dressed differently today. The word of the day was Blake today. First we went over our vocabulary homework that we did last night. Then Rajan shared his summary. Then we talked about what happened in the chapters. (We went into deep thought).

Ella had an argument with Mr. Watson about the Japanese in America helping the Japanese that were bombing. Ella surprisingly got Mr. Watson to take her side.
“Does anyone remember the scene when Tomi and his mother went to the grocery store?” he asked.

This made the class go wild, and hands went up right away.

Mr. Watson makes a chart on the board explaining why the Americans chose to shoot any boats that came into Pearl Harbor without an American flag.

Mr. Watson says that the government very rarely admits they made a mistake and then tries to fix it.

The homework is Chapters 14 and 15 and do your job and journal. And vocabulary pages 33 and 34. If you are number one for jobs you are word wizard 3 questions, if you are number two you are summarizer, if you are number three you are discussion director (short questions 2 and fat questions 2 ), if you are number four you are connecter, if you are number five you are the illustrator, and if you are number six you are passage master. Today in English, we got our quizzes back on transitive and intransitive words. He also said to keep these, hint, they might be in our midterm. On number 2, almost everyone got it wrong. The verb was helping and grandpa was being helped. We also looked at our new vocabulary words on pg. 28-30, these should be exciting!

First Mr. Watson had us take our jobs and journal responses out and swivel and click our tablets. Then Aubrey and Emily had a fight over a seat. Next Mr. Watson had us read our jobs our journal response. Emily read her summarizer and Mr. Watson started talking about the jack hammers in chapter 11. Christy read her job and journal response and her job. Some of the words she had for her job were abruptly, McCoy and tinny.

Johnny had asked, he was a word wizard (someone that records words that pop out to them), What Tomago is, and it turned out to be a Japanese way of saying eggs.

A classmate of mine, Nicki shared her drawing as she states her journal response, which is a summary yet with her opinion. Another friend drew a picture of the Japanese plane bombing
We had a connector, Olivia; she said that when in the story when Tomi had to hide in the bushes till he heard his dog leave reminded her of when she had false sleep because her mom was late out and when she came back they still weren’t asleep, Her mom doesn’t know to this day.

We discussed how Keet is mean because of his dad is abusive to Keet. Many people shared their opinion and we finally concluded that “humans act in their own self interest,” Mr. Watson.

Mr. Watson then started talking about Dads and everybody started talking about their Dad and whether or not he is mean. Then Mr. Watson started talking about baseball and what role does it play in the book. Tomorrow there will be a short quiz on direct and indirect objects. Make sure that you use the blog to find out what sentences could be on the quiz. Make sure that you study.

Today in the beginning of English class Mr. Watson told us to close our tablets and he told us what we were going do. We were going to take out our transitive and intransitive sentences, review them, and pick the best one in our group and the best one that we find we will share in class. We went over what Mr. Watson’s last class did and then we started doing our class’s sentences. Then Mr. Watson said that we could check our grades to see if we would get a progress report in his class. The homework is to read Chapters 10 and 11 in UTBRS.
