Well...today was our last class together. We went over the homework and then discussed The Devil's Arithmetic study guide. You are all ready for your exam. 1 day until final exam
Today Mr. Watson gave us back our Vocabulary tests and we went over them.Then we went over our home work with the whole class. We talked about prepositions and prepositional phrases while doing the homework. Then Mr. Watson went over what was going to be on the exam and looked at an example on the board. Mr. Watson gave us our homework for tonight. Then we worked on our homework for the rest of class.

2 days until final exam...
Today we went over the Classical Roots vocabulary (Honors only), then we took the Unit 12 test. After that we started our homework which is the grammar worksheet on prepositions that we got in class.

3 Days until final exam...
Today in class we opened our grammar books to page 176 One of the tricks that Mr.Watson told us was to take away the other person and see if it sounds right. The real secret is if you’re not sure whether to use a subject pronoun or an object pronoun, read the sentence aloud with only the one pronoun!!!!! If there is a preposition before the word then use whom. And if it s the first word in the sentence then you use who. There will be a question on the exam that you HAVE to use who or whom. The questions on the exam will be the exact format on page 177

First, Mr. Watson told us about how he ran into a bridge pole and ruined his truck… uh oh. Then, we went over our classical roots. Next, Mr. Watson realized that our classical roots were different and therefore, Sasha kept debating whether or not his answers were right. Our classical roots homework is page 37 in classical roots. This is to practice for the format of our exam. While we are taking our vocab test tomorrow he will be grading it. The classical roots on the vocab test tomorrow will be comply, copious, expletive, implement, magnanimous, microcosm, minutiae, polygon, replete, tenuous. He will give us sentences and these words will be in the word bank. After this, we went over page 176 in our grammar book. We went over pronouns as objects of prepositions. IF YOU CAN PUT A PREPOSITION BEFORE THE PRONOUN, it’s an object pronoun. If it doesn’t make sense with one object pronoun then the word is not correct The trick to remembering who and whom as object pronouns and when to use it. - If you can out the preposition in front of the pronoun you need to use whom. 4 days until final exam...
First, we checked our vocab homework. Mr. Watson said he didn’t know what kind of men wore makeup question. Question 8 or 9. Then we opened our e-mail, to our final exam study guide and talked about that. Next, we opened our grammar book to p.174 to review.

Field Day! Go Blue Team...
First, we went over our vocabulary in the red book, pages 134 and 135. After that we worked on our homework due Monday, pages 136 and 137 in our vocabulary book, our classical roots, and we emailed him our book reviews. We also worked on the wikispace for extra credit on our final. We also looked and did our book review templates. Vocabulary pages 136 and 137 due Tuesday.

Unit 12 Intro. and Final Exam Info.
Honors English- Today in class we went over our vocabulary tests. Most of the people got good grades. We talked about our summer break and that we need to pay attention because everything that is being said could be on our finale exam! Our English finale exam is on the 29th of May (TUESDAY). We reviewed our classical roots homework and these are words that could possibly be on our finale exam. Our next vocabulary test will have Classical Root words on lesson 6. On Monday, May 28th, right before the final exam, Mr. Watson will be holding office hours online from 7:00pm to 9:00pm if you have a problem. Everyone can contact Mr. Watson through Skype, and AIM or even email. There will be vocabulary words from units 10-12 on the exam. The next part on the vocabulary part is on Classical Roots lessons 5 and 6. The other part on the exam is the Devil’s Arithmetic. If you answer at least 3 questions on the Wikispace, you will get extra credit on your exam. The last part of the exam is grammar. It is from our grammar book lessons 7-1, 7-2, 7-3, and 7-4. We haven’t looked at them yet, but we did research on it and taught the class. Next week we will look at those lessons. The exam will be compressive. If you pay attention the next 6 days in class, you will do very well on your exam. We have homework due tomorrow pages 134 and 135 and due next Tuesday, Classical Roots lesson 6

Today in English Mr. Watson went over the vocabulary quiz. Mr. watson said that some people used the word vindictive as a noun which was why some people got it wrong. Another one that people got confused with was number 21. mar whose antonym was d repair. On the questions with the comics Mr. Watson shared a story because one of the comics had a huge cord phone. When he was a kid they had the type of phone too. He told us that cell phones were the size of bricks. Later, Mr. Watson gave us a pep talk about our exams and we all agreed that everyone can't wait summer. Here come the moans and groans though. The 6th grade now has to do another vocabulary quiz.:-(so we had to go over our new vocabulary words. Sam decided look at examine his shoes upside down while Hillary was reading the definition of quest. Mr. Watson had a spazzy moment when James and Austin had there out tablet screens up while we were reviewing the word rant. At the last 5 minutes of class Mr. Watson told us about the finale exam. Monday night before the exam we will be able to reach Mr. watson for 7pm-9pm. There will be chapters 10, 11, 12 on the vocab. To get extra points go onto the Devils Arithmetic wikispace and work on the study guide. There will also be grammar on prepositions.

End of THe Devil's Arithmetic
Honors:
First, Mr. Watson told us about what he thought of Philadelphia and gave us some rules for using Skype. He asked us not to use it during school, since you can tell people what you want to face to face. Then, we took out our Devil’s Arithmetic work for this week. Elliot told us about a place called Summaries that he added to our study guide. Now, if you are a summarizer, you can put your summaries there. We all shared our jobs and journal responses.
Mr. Watson told us about things that we will need to know from The Devil’s Arithmetic. He said that we needed to know the passage on pg. 146 where it refers to arithmetic (the Devil’s arithmetic). “A simple bit of mathematics, like subtraction, where one taken away from the top line becomes one added on to the bottom. The Devil’s arithmetic,” was the quote. Mr. Watson also said that on pg. 156, Hannah’s three memories are very important. Hannah told her friends that whoever lived must pass on the message that the Jewish people will survive.

He mentioned that he doesn’t really like it because of all of the trash and shades of brown and gray. After that, Mr. Watson was saying that Skype shouldn’t be used in school unless it is allowed. He also said that Skype IS instant messaging and a phone. “Changing gears”, we reviewed what everyone said about the end of The Devil’s Arithmetic. Some people were confused about Lilith’s Cave, and all it is the place where they kill or burn the Jewish people. We also went over the Devil’s Arithmetic and what we should highlight:
Page 156 is where she talks about Hannah’s Memory
Page 157 is where Shifre, Hannah, and Esther are being chosen.
Page 146 is where the Devil’s Arithmetic takes place.
Page 146 is where Rivka and Hannah do the Plan.
Page 161 is where Hannah goes back to the future.

The Devil's Arithmetic Ch 15 and 16
First, we got our vocab tests back. Some people got morbid wrong because they only wrote unhealthy mental state for the definition, and they should have written gloomy as well.
Then, we took out our vocab books, jobs, and journal responses that were due today. The vocab pages that we had to do were pages 127 & 128.
After we were done checking our homework, Mr. Watson said that he will not be in school on Monday because he is going to Philadelphia. He also told us about something called Skype. It is really cool because you can call anyone in the world from your computer for free. He said we can download it if we want to talk to our pen pals in Italy.
Then, we talked about the TDA reading. It was chapters 15 and 16. Mr. Watson explained to why the blokova only has two fingers now. It is because she has to control her zugangi, and when she loses control of them, they go and take off one of her fingers, which is gross. He also explained that the midden means garbage. All the little children jump in the midden when the commandant comes because if he sees them, he will kill them because small children shouldn’t be there. We talked about Reuven and how he got caught with the commandant. He just came from the hospital and had bad timing. So, since he didn’t have a mom, the commandant, Breuer, said that he would make sure he is with her. That meant that he was going to kill Reuven.
Pgs. 139 140 and 141 talks about rooban. Look at page 135 Mr. Watson says that that page is very important because it tells why the name is the Devils Arithmetic. This is because they have numbers of how many day they are in the death camps and the devils part is because of how bad it is.

Chapers 11 and 12
Today in CP class, we went over our vocab test that we just got back. Some people got questions 5, 6, 7 wrong, because they either put the definitions in the line, or didn’t write sentences related to “The Red Pony.” Then we talked about chapters 11 and 12, and people read their Job and/or journal response. When Max M. read this journal response, he was wondering if the Badchan was still alive. As it turned out the Badchan is still alive, and he made the comment, “Ya, the devil’s hands.” We also talked about Chaya giving up thinking, and crying. Our homework for CP is read chapters 13 and 14 and do job and journal response, by Tuesday. Today in Honor’s class, we first talked about the project out in the ocean, the sand project. We then went over our vocabulary tests. After that, we took out our Jobs and Journal Responses for T.D.A. Chapters 11-12 and went over them. I think that the story didn’t get any better, but at the same time, it didn’t get any worse.

Vocabulary Test Unit 9
Me again!
No scribes today because we just took our unit 9 vocabulary test. Remember that Chapters 11-12 in The Devil's Arithmetic with your job and journal response will be due tomorrow. You also have Red Pony essay revisions due Friday as well. See you then!

Review Unit 9
Hey kids,
This is Mr. Watson posting today's notes because we didn't have study hall today.
Today we went over last night's vocabulary homework which was pages 103 and 104 in your vocab book. In Honors we then went over Classical Roots lesson 3. For the second half of class we played a game to review for the test tomorrow. The test will cover Unit 9 vocab. The Honors test will NOT have classical roots words on it this week. For Friday you need to have read Chapters 10 and 11 in The Devil's Arithmetic, and have your job and journal response completed.
Don't forget that your Red Pony essay revisions are due Friday as well!

The Devil's Arithmetic Ch 7-10
Today we went over our TDA work
Mr. Watson showed us where to find the book review things are on the blog. They are located on the on the left hand side and it is under book reviews
An important quote that Dana pointed out was “Pretty girl with faraway eyes. Why do you look with such surprise? How did you get to be so wise? Old girl in young-girl disguise.”
The book is obviously getting better, but it is also getting worse for the characters in the book
There were many clues in the story like when they went by the field of peasants and yelled “help, help!” Their response was running there fingers across their necks, like giving them a signal that they were going to die. Also when they hadn’t realized that they child was dead and then some time later they finally realized that they had died
Some metaphors in the book were “The snake smiles but shows no teeth,” and “Better the fox to guard the hens and the wolves to guard the sheep.”
Delaney’s discussion director questions = Why did the Nazi’s tell the Jews to lie down? So they would be less resistant when they tried to take their things. How did the Nazi’s convince the Jews to get in the trucks? They told them the government needed to relocate them. How did the child die in the box cars? He was suffocated or smothered and was starving. Why wouldn’t anyone believe Hannah when she tried to tell them about the concentration camps?
Pointers for test: page 60 Fagye is talking to Chaya: life will be good for us for ever and ever.
62: I am not a fortune teller nor yet a badchan. I see the malach ha-mavis. 69: the snakes smiles but shows no teeth. Relocating the Jews. Metaphor: Nazis are lying. Smiling, the Jews aren’t seeing the lie.
70: the better the fox guard the fox to guard the hens and the wolf to guard the sheep. Fox don’t guard sheep and wolfs don’t guard sheep.
74: second paragraph. Good description of the things were there from the people that were their.
75: second paragraph” Hannah held her breath. IF she held it for long enough maybe she would wake up.
78: Some where a child cried out that she had to go to the bathroom. A little while later, a smell announced that she had. 78: the stench of the crowded perspiration, a powerful stew of human perspiration and fear and the smell of children being sick. “Yes, they ran their fingers across their throats” They are going to go through horrible things.
83: the child wasn’t noticed because of so much loud noise and stories.
After the discussion we went over our homework which was pages 101 and 102 in the vocab book.
