End of THe Devil's Arithmetic

Honors:



First, Mr. Watson told us about what he thought of Philadelphia and gave us some rules for using Skype. He asked us not to use it during school, since you can tell people what you want to face to face. Then, we took out our Devil’s Arithmetic work for this week. Elliot told us about a place called Summaries that he added to our study guide. Now, if you are a summarizer, you can put your summaries there. We all shared our jobs and journal responses.

Mr. Watson told us about things that we will need to know from The Devil’s Arithmetic. He said that we needed to know the passage on pg. 146 where it refers to arithmetic (the Devil’s arithmetic). “A simple bit of mathematics, like subtraction, where one taken away from the top line becomes one added on to the bottom. The Devil’s arithmetic,” was the quote. Mr. Watson also said that on pg. 156, Hannah’s three memories are very important. Hannah told her friends that whoever lived must pass on the message that the Jewish people will survive.



CP:

The first thing that we went over in CP English is about the trip that Mr. Watson took to Pennsylvania. He mentioned that he doesn’t really like it because of all of the trash and shades of brown and gray. After that, Mr. Watson was saying that Skype shouldn’t be used in school unless it is allowed. He also said that Skype IS instant messaging and a phone. “Changing gears”, we reviewed what everyone said about the end of The Devil’s Arithmetic. Some people were confused about Lilith’s Cave, and all it is the place where they kill or burn the Jewish people. We also went over the Devil’s Arithmetic and what we should highlight:



Page 156 is where she talks about Hannah’s Memory



Page 157 is where Shifre, Hannah, and Esther are being chosen.



Page 146 is where the Devil’s Arithmetic takes place.



Page 146 is where Rivka and Hannah do the Plan.



Page 161 is where Hannah goes back to the future.
